Alex Gerasimov

Alex Gerasimov (April 26,1936 – – May 3, 2019)

GTUnano20 is dedicated to the memory of Prof. Alex Gerasimov, who has initiated the GTUnano conference series in Georgia.

Alex Gerasimov is a native of Tbilisi (Georgia). During the last years (since 2010) he was a Professor in the Department of Engineering Physics at the Georgian Technical University (GTU). He completed his MSc in Physics (1959) and obtained scientific degrees of Candidate (1975) and Doctor (1988) of Sciences in Solid State Physics at the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU). Having been involved in materials research for about 60 years, Alex Gerasimov also worked as Researcher and then Chair / Head of Department / Scientific-Research Laboratory of Semiconductor Microelectronics at the TSU; Head of Laboratory at the Scientific Institute of Microelectronics; and the like. In recent years, he was Scientific Director of the Gerasimov Research Laboratory, the Representative office in Georgia of the Liquid Light Inc. (Seattle, USA).

Alex Gerasimov worked not only in academia, but also in microelectronic industry of the former Soviet Union: he was Deputy Director and Chief Engineer of the Industrial-Scientific Association ‘Mion’.

Alex Gerasimov developed his expertise in the fields of Solid State Physics, Semiconductors, Microelectronics, Nanophysics, and Nanotechnology. He has (co)authored more than 240 publications, among them 2 monographs, obtained up to 10 invention patents. In 1998, the International Committee on Scientific Discovers recognized Alex Gerasimov’s work “Exoelectronic Emission of Solids” as a scientific discovery.

Alex Gerasimov was member of Academy of Natural Sciences of Georgia, Academy of Engineering of Georgia, Scientific Council on Physics and Chemistry of Semiconductors at the SU Academy of Sciences, All-Soviet Union Methodology Council on Microelectroncs, etc.

Alex Gerasimov was laureate of the Ilia Vekua Award of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences. He owned also number of governmental awards, in particular, USSR Order of Honor.

Alex Gerasimov’s interests extended beyond research, organization of science, and pedagogy. He was Vice-President of the International Committee of Public Diplomacy and Member of the Georgia Constitutional Commission. In his youth, he was member of the Georgian National Basketball Team. Prof. Alex Gerasimov was a researcher of wide scientific interests. But, in recent years he focused his efforts on introducing the concept of “molecular-potential theory of substance”, which should find its practical implementation in nanotechnology.
